NEW! AED Training & Certificate Course Offering

CBT-T: Brief cognitive behavioural therapy for non-underweight adults with eating disorders

The Academy of Eating Disorders is pleased to announce the development of a new series of Training & Certification offerings, the first of which is CBT-T: Brief cognitive behavioral therapy for non-underweight adults with eating disorders.

This 8-hour didactic course will be taught by Glenn Waller, Professor of Clinical Psychology at the University of Sheffield, UK on February 22 & 23 from 12pm – 4pm ET via Zoom.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT-ED) has the strongest evidence in working with adults with eating disorders, particularly among non-underweight patients. However, its duration and service organization issues mean that many patients find it difficult or impossible to access effective CBT. This has led to the development of a CBT-ED protocol for treating non-underweight adults with eating disorders, using 10 weekly sessions – CBT-T.

This training (over two sessions of four hours each) will briefly address the rationale and evidence for CBT-T, and will then consider the therapeutic stance that clinicians need to deliver CBT-T. The remainder of the training sessions will detail the phases of CBT-T, focusing on the use of existing evidence-based techniques in a way that is adapted to the patient’s individual pathology. Phases focus on core techniques such as exposure and nutritional stability, behavioral experiments, addressing emotionally-driven behaviors, body image work, and ending therapy appropriately. The first day of the training will focus on food and eating, while the second will focus on emotional factors and body image. Case material and video role plays will be used throughout to illustrate how to deliver CBT-T.

Learning objectives

  1. Knowledge of the principles and evidence for CBT-T.
  2. Awareness of the competences and meta-competences that underpin CBT-T.
  3. Ability to deliver CBT-T effectively and flexibly in routine clinical settings.
